Golden Retrievers are among the most popular family pets in the United States. Even though they were originally bred as hunting dogs, but quickly gained a reputation for being a great family dog because of their gentle and easy going temperament. They also make great service dogs and are often used as narcotics dogs. Dr. Bonita Bergin, the man behind the idea of a "service dog" reports that Golden Retrievers are the best suited breed for the work because of their combination of gentle disposition, great intelligence, and strength.

The general appearance of a Golden is that of a strong, active dog, sound and put together well, not clumsy nor too long in the leg, displaying a good expression with a personality that is eager, alert and self confident. Its overall appearance, balance, gait and purpose are to be given more emphasis than any of its component parts. In size, a male Golden Retriever should stand 23 to 24 inches at the withers, or shoulder and weighs 65 to 75 pounds, with the typical females standing 21 1/2 to 22 1/2 inches weighing 55 to 65 pounds. They have a dense inner coat for adequate warmth. The outer coat is sleek, lies flat against the body and is water repellent. The official color of the breed is the varying shades of gold that are most often seen.

Another distinctive facet of the Goldens temperament is versatility. Goldens can work hard in the field one hour and be the perfect Childs companion the next.
